85W-140 Gear Oil (High Performance GL-4)
Greyhound 85W-140 GL-4 Gear Oil is a high-performance extreme pressure (EP) lubricant formulated from premium mineral base oils and advanced additive technology. It provides excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and protection against wear, shock loading, and deposit formation, helping to extend both lubricant and component life under severe operating conditions.
The oil forms a durable protective film and is specifically formulated for specialised gearbox and transmission applications where higher viscosity is required, together with controlled friction characteristics. It is suitable for selected manual gearboxes, transaxles, and industrial equipment where GL-4 performance and yellow metal compatibility are critical.
API Performance Levels:
- GL-4 – Moderate EP additive level designed for manual gearboxes and synchronised transmissions requiring compatibility with yellow metals (such as brass/bronze components).
- GL-5 – Higher EP additive level for hypoid gears, axles, and differentials operating under heavy load and shock conditions.
Understanding GL-4 vs GL-5:
GL-4 oils are formulated with a balanced level of extreme pressure additives to provide gear protection while maintaining the correct friction characteristics required for synchronisers. This ensures smooth gear engagement and protects sensitive yellow metal components used in many transmission systems. GL-5 oils contain a higher level of EP additives designed for heavily loaded differential gears. While they provide superior load-carrying capability, these additives may reduce synchroniser performance in manual gearboxes. For this reason, GL-4 should always be used where specified for transmission applications, while GL-5 is reserved for differential and final drive systems.
Use GL-4 where specified for gearbox applications requiring controlled friction and synchroniser protection. For differential applications requiring maximum extreme-pressure performance, a GL-5 or GL-5 LS oil should be selected.
