SAE 90 Gear Oil (High Performance GL-4)

API Performance Levels:
- GL-4 – Moderate EP additive level, designed for manual gearboxes and synchronised transmissions where compatibility with yellow metals (such as brass/bronze synchros) is required.
- GL-5 – Higher EP additive level for hypoid gears and differentials operating under heavy load and shock conditions.
Understanding GL-4 vs GL-5:
GL-4 oils are formulated with a balanced level of extreme pressure additives to protect gears while maintaining correct friction characteristics for synchronisers. This ensures smooth gear shifting and prevents damage to yellow metal components.
GL-5 oils contain a higher level of EP additives designed for heavily loaded differential gears, but this can reduce synchroniser performance in manual gearboxes. For this reason, GL-4 should always be used where specified for gearbox applications, while GL-5 is used for differentials and final drives requiring higher load protection.
