Rock Drill Oil

Rock drill oil lubricates pneumatic percussion equipment: jackhammers, drifters, stopers, jacklegs and drill rigs used in mining, quarrying and construction.

It is a demanding application. The oil is carried into the tool on the compressed air line, has to cling to internal surfaces under constant hammering and vibration, and must keep working in the presence of large volumes of water and rock dust. Ordinary oils are blown straight through. Rock drill oils therefore carry heavy tackiness additives so the film stays put, extreme-pressure chemistry for the percussive shock loading, and strong emulsifying or water-resisting properties depending on the formulation.

Grades are selected by ambient temperature and the size and duty of the tool, with heavier grades for hotter conditions and larger machines. Correct lubricator settings on the airline make a large difference to tool life.
