Cutting Fluids

Greyhound Lubricants supplies cutting fluid for turning, milling, drilling, tapping, sawing and grinding in machine shops and production engineering.

Cutting fluid does four jobs at once: it cools the cutting zone, lubricates the tool-workpiece interface, flushes swarf clear and protects freshly machined surfaces from rust. Water-miscible products, mixed as an emulsion or semi-synthetic, lead on cooling and suit high-speed work. Neat cutting oils lead on lubrication and are used for heavy, slow operations such as broaching, gear cutting and deep-hole drilling where surface finish and tool life matter most.

Mix control is what keeps a water-miscible fluid working. Check concentration with a refractometer, always add concentrate to water rather than the reverse, keep tramp oil skimmed off, and watch for the sour smell that signals bacterial growth in a neglected sump.
