Farm equipment puts unusual demands on a lubricant. A single tractor transmission may combine the gearbox, hydraulic system, final drives and oil-immersed wet brakes in one sump, which is why multi-purpose fluids exist: UTTO for transmission and hydraulic duty, and STOU where the same oil also serves the engine. These fluids have to carry gear loads, run a hydraulic system, and still give quiet, judder-free wet brake performance. Seasonal use adds another problem, since machinery standing between seasons is exposed to condensation and rust.

Match the fluid to the specification in the machine handbook, keep breathers and filters clean in dusty field conditions, and check oil condition before each season rather than only on hours run.
