Circulating Oil

Circulating oil is used where oil is pumped continuously through bearings, gears and machine components and then returned to a reservoir, as in paper machines, turbines, large fan and blower sets, rolling mills and heavy bearing installations.

Because the same charge of oil runs for very long periods, longevity is the key property. Circulating oils are built for oxidation stability so they resist thickening and varnish formation over thousands of hours, good demulsibility so water separates and can be drained rather than emulsifying, strong air release so entrained air does not cause pump cavitation, and effective rust and corrosion protection for the whole system.

Grades run from ISO 32 up to 320, selected by bearing type, speed and operating temperature. Regular oil analysis is worthwhile on a circulating system, since it flags water ingress and oxidation long before failure.
