Paraffin

Paraffin, also known as kerosene or illuminating paraffin, is a light distillate fuel and solvent used in heaters, lamps, stoves, blow torches and a range of cleaning and degreasing tasks.

In workshops it is commonly used as a parts-washing fluid and for thinning or flushing, since it lifts oil and light grease readily and evaporates slowly enough to keep working on a soak. As a fuel it burns in wick and pressure appliances designed for it.

Paraffin is flammable and its vapour is harmful, so it needs ventilated use, sealed and clearly labelled storage away from heat and ignition sources, and it must be kept well out of reach of children. Never store it in a drink container, and never use it to start or accelerate a fire. Dispose of used paraffin through a licensed waste route.
