Coolant
Engine coolant protects an engine against overheating, freezing and internal corrosion, and Greyhound Lubricants supplies both concentrate and ready-to-use premix options.
A coolant is a blend of glycol, water and a corrosion inhibitor package. The glycol raises the boiling point and lowers the freezing point, but it is the inhibitor package that does the long-term work of protecting aluminium heads, cast iron blocks, brass radiators and solder joints. Inhibitor technologies differ: conventional inorganic products need changing more often, while organic acid and hybrid technologies are formulated for extended service life. Mixing types can drop inhibitors out of solution and form gel or sludge, so a full flush is the safe route when changing technology.
Never run an engine on water alone. Even in a warm climate, water without inhibitor will corrode the cooling system quickly.
